What to do instead of smoking at night: 20 evening ideas

October 12, 2026 · Not medical advice

For a lot of people the habit isn’t really the weed, it’s the evening: the couch, the show, the time slot after the day is done. Plan that slot and the rest of the break gets much easier.

Change the setting

Habits are tied to places and times. Sit somewhere else, eat dinner at a different time, take the long way home. Small changes break the automatic “now it’s time” feeling.

20 evening ideas

  1. Cook something new, start to finish, with music on.
  2. Go for an evening walk and take a different street each night.
  3. Call someone you haven’t talked to in a while.
  4. Start a series you’ve been saving, one episode a night.
  5. Take a long shower or a bath.
  6. Work out, or try a 20-minute yoga or stretching video.
  7. Read in a different room than usual.
  8. Play a game with a friend, online or in person.
  9. Pick up a hands-on hobby: drawing, a puzzle, building something.
  10. Plan a weekend trip, even one you won’t take yet.
  11. Go to the gym, a pool or a climbing wall at your usual time.
  12. Make a really good dessert or snack.
  13. Clean out one small space: a drawer, a shelf, your desktop.
  14. Listen to a full album, front to back, doing nothing else.
  15. Write a few lines about your day.
  16. Learn a song, a recipe or ten words of a new language.
  17. Meet a friend somewhere that isn’t where you usually used.
  18. Go to bed early with a book.
  19. Watch the sunset somewhere outside.
  20. Get ready for tomorrow: lunch, clothes, a short to-do list.

Keep it ready

Pick three or four that fit you and decide in the afternoon what tonight’s will be. A plan made at 4 PM is much easier to follow than one you try to invent at 9 PM. When a craving hits anyway, give it ten minutes.

A detour every evening

Every Mile Zero postcard comes with a “detour for tonight”: one small thing to do with your evening, tied to the town you just reached. It’s this list, one idea at a time, delivered when you need it.
