T-break or quitting? What a tolerance break is and how long to take

October 12, 2026 · Not medical advice

A T-break (short for tolerance break) is a planned, temporary pause from cannabis. It has an end date, and what you do after it is up to you. That’s the main difference from quitting.

T-break or quitting?

Quitting is open-ended: the goal is to stop. A T-break is a set stretch, like 7, 14 or 21 days, with a finish line you can see from the start. People take one to reset a habit that has crept up, to feel how a normal week goes without it, to save money for something, or simply to prove to themselves they can. Some people finish and go back to how things were, some change how often they use, and some find they want to keep going. A T-break leaves all of those open.

Why people take one

  • Using has turned into an every-evening habit rather than a choice.
  • It takes more to get the same effect than it used to.
  • Money, sleep or mornings are starting to feel the cost.
  • Something is coming up that needs a clear head: an exam, a new job, a trip.
  • Curiosity: what is a week like without it?

You don’t need a big reason. “I want to see if I can” is a good one.

How long should it be?

  • 7 days is a good first break. It covers a full week of routines, including a weekend, and it’s short enough to feel doable.
  • 14 days gives you time past the first week, when the routine has already changed and the days start to feel normal.
  • 21 days is for when you want the new routine to settle in, or you’ve done shorter breaks before and want to go further.

Pick the one you’re likely to finish. A finished 7-day break does more for your confidence than an abandoned 30-day one. You can extend at the end.

What we don’t promise

You’ll read a lot online about exactly how many days “reset” your tolerance. Bodies differ, habits differ, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise. A T-break is a chance to notice what changes for you. If you’re worried about your use, about stopping or about how you feel, please talk to a doctor.

Pick a road

In Mile Zero the three lengths are three real highways: Blue Ridge Parkway for 7 days, Pacific Coast Highway for 14 and Route 66 for 21. One stop a day, a postcard every evening. Not sure where to start? Our 7-day plan walks you through the first week.
